Out of recognition

Rita wants to change her name because according to her, it represents the person she once was. Now, she has grown up and has been educated. She is not as innocent and ignorant as she was before starting the course. She knows what clothes to wear, what wine to buy, what plays to see, what books and papers to read. She is so independent that she feels able to do without Frank's trying to teach her more. So she prefers another name according to her present state.

Hi, Lili!!

I agree with you in that her name is a symbol for Rita. She feels superior and better if she can adapt her new self to match her name.
However, I don't believe that only by changing her name or the way she dresses she will be a different nor better person. And I don't think she is ready to face the real world without a bit of Frank's help at this stage, don't you think??

Bye!

Lau

Hi, Lau

I totally agree with you in that a new name won't reflect the person she has become. As far as her independence to face the world is concerned, I think that if Rita without knowing much about reality was able to achieve her goal, she can do much more, with Frank's help or not.
Kisses,
Lili

What was Rita's original goal, Lili? Because to me the only thing she's achieved so far is to become a parody of high class's lifestyle...

Why is she doing what she's doing? Whose criteria is she following to decide "what clothes to wear, what wine to buy, what plays to see, what books and papers to read"?

I know this Rita is far, far more experienced than the one we met at the beginning of the play, but how much wiser is she???

Gladys
